Coaching becomes government policy

BERR, the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform announced Local Community Business Coaching as one of the products in their "simplifying business support" agenda on July 8th 2008.

BizFizz is the leading business support model in the UK in which Coaching is the preferred methodology for offering business support to entrepreneurs living in areas of economic decline. Over the last seven years, BizFizz programmes have provided coaching to entrepreneurs across England and Scotland. BizFizz book unlocks revolutionary business story

" Who's the Entrepreneur? The BizFizz Story: Unleashing the passion, transforming communities " tells the story of how revolutionary new business initiatives, in ‘deprived’ areas such as Toxteth, Jarrow and East London, are regenerating communities across the country.

The book reflects the experience of the ‘BizFizz’ programme and draws out the lessons to effectively support entrepreneurs within their own communities, particularly those experiencing economic disadvantage. It highlights the powerful role that enterprise, when supported by the wider community, can play to regenerate a community. The book is largely written by practicing BizFizz coaches who have lived and breathed the role for the past two years.

2008 SFEDI Enterprise Champion Support Professional
Paul Davies, BizFizz Coach and founder of Clowne Enterprise, was named best support professional by SFEDI, the small business support standards body. Paul, who has been the BizFizz coach in Clowne since 2004, has provided support to many new businesses in the area. Paul said “In three years, we’ve helped create 70 new businesses, which just goes to show the impact that local and well supported business support actually has, it does make a huge difference.”

Twenty-one BizFizz projects
Since the success of four pilot projects initiated in 2001, BizFizz projects are now operational in twenty-one locations in England. The new areas are benefitting from a BizFizz Coach in the heart of the community who supports entrepreneurs who want to start or build a business.
Who is BizFizz for?
BizFizz takes a holistic view of individuals - their history, skills, ambitions, contacts and attitude - rather than their business idea alone. Read the stories of entrepreneurs who made their business dreams a reality with the help of BizFizz.

What's the impact on local economies?
Sustainable local economies need a ground force of 'can-do' individuals contributing to a vibrant local economy that is resilient to national and global economic mood swings. BizFizz provides a mechanism to mobilise people who want to help each other realise personal dreams and reinvigorate the local economy. Find out how it works.

Who's behind BizFizz
BizFizz was jointly developed by nef (the new economics foundation) and The Civic Trust. We believe that promoting enterprise is a good way to regenerate communities because local businesses are more likely to employ local people, provide services to improve the local quality of life, spend money locally and so circulate wealth in the community, help people to achieve their dreams, and become skilled and confident, and promote community cohesion.
